On August 13th, 2010, WEEE Ireland turned five. To mark the 33 million + Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment (WEEE) appliances recycled by the scheme over the last five years, an artist was commissioned to create an installation solely from WEEE materials. The piece was displayed at a public collection day in the Royal Hospital, Kilmainham where the Irish Museum of Modern Art is also housed.
To put the success of the WEEE Ireland initiative into perspective, here are some recycling statistics. Since 2005, WEEE Ireland has collected:
- Enough TVs and monitors to circle the M50 fourteen times over.
- Enough small appliances to exceed the weight of metal used in the construction of the Aviva Stadium six times over.
- Enough Large Household Appliances and Fridge/Freezers to fill Croke Park forty-one times over.
- 10 million fluorescent and energy saving lamps.
- The equivalent of over seven pieces of WEEE for every man, woman and child in Ireland.
